Partners involved in bringing a Maggie's to Aberdeen
We believe it is important that the appeal to bring Maggie’s to Aberdeen is based on in-depth knowledge of the local social and financial environment. A combination of the exceptional caliber of the Aberdeen Committee and their networks and skills; the commitment of the Elizabeth Montgomerie Foundation; and the operational resources and vast experience of Maggie’s gives rise to a fantastic opportunity to create a dynamic and successful appeal constructed specifically for the Aberdeen environment.
The Elizabeth Montgomerie Foundation
In order to deliver the Aberdeen Centre, Maggie’s has entered a partnership with the Elizabeth Montgomerie Foundation (EMF) which was established by Colin Montgomerie in memory of his mother, Elizabeth, who died of lung cancer in 1991. Having witnessed the devastating effect that cancer has on patients, their families and carers, Colin established the Foundation to provide practical and emotional support for those affected by cancer.
This is the second partnership between EMF and Maggie’s. The first is in the grounds of Monklands Hospital in Lanarkshire. The Aberdeen building will be named ‘The Elizabeth Montgomerie Building’. The Foundation has three Trustees, Robert Cook, Guy Kinnings and Colin Montgomerie.
The Monty's Maggie's Appeal Committee (MMAC)
The Aberdeen Appeal Committee for the Monty’s Maggie’s Appeal is spearheaded by Appeal Chair, Colin Welsh, CEO of Simmons & Company Intl Ltd. Colin is joined by Stewart Milne, Joanna Robertson, Ian Ord, Ian Thompson, Robert Cook (represented by Andy Roger) and Mrs Patricia Straughen. The Committee and Maggie’s jointly employ an Appeal Director, Sharon O’Loan, to support the Committee and co-ordinate Appeal activity. The Monty’s Maggie’s Appeal was publically launched through the Press and Journal on the 21st of June 2010.
NHS Grampian
The NHS is not a formal partner but will provide the land and has incorporated Maggie’s as part of it’s development of services. It sees Maggie’s as a symbol of its intention to improve services. The longer term aim is to build a big cancer cerntre and tis will be done on a staged basis.
Press and Journal
The Press and Journal is supporting the Monty’s Maggie’s Appeal for an initial period of 18 months, from June 2010 to August 2011. The Press and Journal will help us to maintain the platform and exposure which will encourage fundraising through community groups and local businesses to flourish.
