Go Forth and Swim!
The Firth of Forth is the place to be for water babies this week
At 1pm today, 10 Scottish Gas swimmers will attempt to cross the Firth of Forth for charity. An eight meter tidal range and strong currents are some of the trials they will face, not to mention avoiding the occasional oil tanker or cross-channel ferry. The event is the latest high profile event in Scottish Gas’ ongoing sponsorship of Scottish Swimming.
The daring gas team will raise much needed funds for the Scottish Gas charity, ‘Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres’ and the British Gas charity of the year, Make a Wish. Over £5,000 is expected to be raised by the endeavour.
Former Great Britain triathlon champion, Rick Kiddle is taking part in the swim and has been helping to train the team. Some of those taking part were not particularly strong swimmers eight weeks ago, and have been training extra hard for this tough challenge.
Rescue boats and crew have been donated by well-wishers to ensure the event is fully in keeping with our Safety First approach, and they’ll accompany the swimmers across the 1.6 mile open water stretch.
One of the participants will be Gearoid Lane, Managing Director of Communities and New Energy for Scottish Gas. Gearoid says of the venture:
“I’m proud to be taking part with fellow colleagues from the business and look forward to reaching the other bank, and a blanket, as fast as possible. We’re all delighted to be raising money for some great causes but also raising awareness of our fantastic partnership with Scottish Swimming.”
