The People's Postcode Lottery introduces new people to Maggie's

Maggie's Centres are delighted to be one of the charity partners of the People's Postcode Lottery. On Sunday, at one of the most remote postcodes in the UK, more people found out about the support Maggie's offer.

On Sunday 18 April the KW14 7JW postcode in Thurso celebrated winning an incredible £2.1 million as a result of the People's Postcode Lottery Spring Rollover.

Carole Bridge, Centre Head for Maggie's Highlands, joined in the fun and delivered an emotional speech about the help and support Maggie's is receiving from the People's Postcode Lottery as one of their official charity partners.

Carole said; "Maggie's Centres have benefited to the sum of over £1 million in Scotland alone! With the partnership expanding in England and Wales, as Maggie's looks to develop a network of centres across the UK, we are extremely greatful for the support of the People's Postcode Lottery."

"To give you an idea of how much that money helps Maggie's, our Highlands Centre at Raigmore Hospital in Inverness costs around £300,000 per year to run. We estimate that the cost per visit to Maggie's is around £30 meaning that the total received would allow over 36,000 people to access the unique mix of practical, emotional and psychological support that Maggie's offer to anyone affected by any type of cancer, as well as their family and friends."

"Anyone from any postcode can win the People's Postcode Lottery. Anyone from any postcode can be hit with a diagnosis of cancer."

"Maggie's Highlands Centre helps people from any postcode in the Highlands and Islands. It is a vast geographical area. People travel for miles to receive their treatment at Raigmore Hospital, often staying in Inverness for the week before travelling home at the weekend. So Maggie's Centre can become a home from home for them."

"All of our centres are designed to be warm, welcoming and homely. Great care is taken to ensure that the environment within our centre(s) is the right environment for people to feel comfortable talking about their very personal and emotional experiences with cancer. It is the right environment for people to come to ask for support and the right environment in which to deliver the support."

"Maggie's Highlands opened in 2005 and in June this year we will celebrate our fifth birthday. We help the people of the Highlands and islands of Scotland to live with, through and beyond cancer and we also receive a great deal of support in return with people fundraising and volunteering for Maggie's."

"I would like to take this opportunity to invite anyone interested in visiting our centre to come along. We are open from 9am until 5pm, Monday to Friday."

Cheques of various sizes were issued on the day with the big winners being Mark and Maureen Jamieson who walked away from the event with a massive cheque for £834,824.

After the festivities, Carole mingled with the crowd and met several people affected by cancer that didn't know about Maggie's before her speech and said that they would visit the centre as a result of it.

Carole said; "It has been a fun day for so many people, and what made it all the more worthwhile was raising awareness about Maggie's and meeting people who didn't know about us beforehand. Helping people to live with cancer is why we are here and the People's Postcode Lottery have been fabulous in helping to raise not only funds, but awareness. Maggie's is a growing charity and the People's Postcode Lottery mailing, adverts and website all help to promote Maggie's and their other charity partners. They have been a great help and we are thankful for their support."
