Maggie's Edinburgh in Numbers: 2007
Around 75 people drop in to the Maggie’s Centre in the grounds of the Western General Hospital each day and this year the Centre had a record-breaking 18,000 visits. Andrew, Seonaid, Isabel, Elspeth and Anne are there from Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, with some evenings, to provide support to anybody affected by cancer.
For those who have not visited a Maggie’s Centre*, we’ve put together the following statistics** to give you some idea of what goes on inside that warm, friendly & uplifting building so many consider a home-from-home.
60% of the people who visit the Centre have, or have had, cancer.
40% are families, friends & carers.
Each month Centre-visitors consume around 4,000 biscuits which are washed down by around 10,000 cups of tea & coffee.
65% of Centre visitors are female, 35% are male.
Last year 180 people have taken part in one of the courses Maggie’s runs: either the Living with Cancer Course, the Caring for Someone with Cancer Course or the Relaxation & Stress Management Course.
240 people have attend a Look Good Feel Better Workshop since the start of the year, most of which have been run by Annette and are supported by the Toiletry & Perfume Foundation.
Approximately 30 people pop in to the Centre each week to attend one of the Drop-in Relaxation Sessions run by Seonaid and Isabel.
Since January 2007, Anne, the Centre’s Benefits Advisor, has secured benefits and grants totalling £740,000 for people affected by cancer in Edinburgh and beyond.
There are 10 people in the beginners Tai Chi Group at any one time, with ‘graduates’ moving to the advanced group.
12 people attend a Nutrition Course run by Kellie each week to learn more about the impact diet has on their health and what they can do to help themselves.
There are 15 people in the Young Person’s Support Group, a support network, run by Andrew, for people aged between 17– 30 who are living with cancer.
There are 8 regulars in the Friday Afternoon Art Therapy Group. This is run by Trish, a qualified Art Therapist, and the aim of the group is to allow people to slow down, gather their thoughts and express through pictures, shapes and colours feelings that they may have difficulty putting in to words.
10 children attend the Kids Day. This is run by Seonaid one Saturday a month and is an information day for young children of parents with cancer.
*If you would like to visit the Centre to see for yourself how the money raised is being spent, please do not hesitate to contact Marion Taylor, the Centre’s Fundraiser, on 0131 537 3135. Marion will be only too pleased to make the necessary arrangements and show you personally what your wonderful support is helping us deliver.
