Regulars from Penicuik pubs score a hole-in-one with Maggie’s
Big-hearted regulars and staff at two Penicuik pubs have raised over £5,000 for Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centre in Edinburgh.

A cheque was presented to a representative from the innovative charity on Sunday, following an annual Maggie’s Golfing Competition between regulars at The Crown and The Railway Pubs.
And the generous donation, which is the culmination of a series of fundraising activities, certainly hit the fairway for Maggie's, who provide emotional and psychological support to people with cancer and their friends and family at their Centre at the Western General Hospital.
The relationship between Maggie’s and the two pubs on High Street began when one of the owners of The Crown, Jimmy Martin, was diagnosed with testicular cancer last March.
32-year-old Jimmy, of Penicuik, said: “Maggie’s helped me through that difficult time of my life. One of the hardest things for me was explaining the situation to my children and letting them know that it wasn’t a death sentence. Talks with staff and visitors at Maggie’s and information booklets I received there, really helped me to discuss this with my children.”
Following such help, Jimmy and The Railway’s Simon Rennie, along with many others, decided to plan a week’s worth of activities in aid of Maggie’s last October.
This snowballed to become an entire month of fundraising, which included football games, an Ann Summers party, a race night, a draughts and dominos event, plus their first Maggie’s Golf Competition. Furthermore, the Royal Bank of Scotland branch in Penicuik donated £1000 as many of their staff had enjoyed such events.
One year on and the organisers have pulled together all the proceeds and used their second golfing tournament, held at West Linton Golf Club, as the platform in which to present their marvelous donation.
Fundraising Co-ordinator for Maggie's Edinburgh, Marion Taylor, was on hand on Sunday to collect the cheque. She said: “This is a fantastic amount to raise with a lot of hard work going into organising the various events.
“I would like to thank everyone from the Railway and The Crown, from the staff to the customers, for supporting Maggie's. At Maggie's we rely on public donations and, therefore, fundraising events like this help us support the 18,000 visitors we have a year who come through the doors at the Edinburgh Centre.
“If you would like to get involved in fundraising for Maggie's please don't hesitate to get in touch with me on 0131 537 3135.”
