Sammie's Moonwalk Story

Why am I Walking the Walk for Maggie’s?

I first heard of Maggie’s last year when my mum started talking about it.  My mum was told she had cancer in February last year.  She didn’t really tell me much about it because she didn’t want me to worry. I just knew that she went to the hospital a lot and went to Maggie’s too. I was quite curious about Maggie’s and asked if I could visit with her.  She took me for the first time during one of the school holidays earlier this year.

At first I thought it was like a big house, there was a library, kitchen, table and rooms. I spoke to some of my mums new friends from Maggie’s and people that worked there that also became my mums friends. I thought that the cancer patients were really nice and the staff was very welcoming.

I have been to Maggie’s a few times now and have met lots of people.  People who work there and people who have or had cancer. Everybody is so kind.

My mum has had a lot of support from the staff and from the people who go to Maggie’s and she has met lots of new friends. I am very proud of my mum for coping the way she has.  She said that going to Maggie’s has taught her how to cope and now she wants to give something back by doing the Moon Walk.  I asked if I could tag along as I really felt for all the cancer patients at Maggie’s.  I also wanted to do it because it sounds like an exciting night and we have been given a moonwalk hat, a t-shirt and bra to decorate. I have asked my friends at school and some of my teachers to sponsor me and I hope to raise a lot of money!
