We are extremely grateful to Scotland’s Garden Scheme who appointed Maggie’s Centres as a new beneficiary this year. Scotland’s Garden Scheme aims to raise as much money as possible for charities by opening over 400 gardens, which are generally inaccessible to the public.

Maggie’s Lanarkshire would like to thank all the Gardens who opened their doors this year.  In particular, Biggar Park and Baitlaws, Lamington.

If you would like to get involved next year – either by opening your own garden or by helping out at some of the bigger openings please contact Julie on 01698 366948 or e-mail julie@maggiescentres.org.

  • Sound of Music: A Sing-a-long

Two nuns from the sing-a-long version of the Sound of Music

Lanark came alive with the sound of music as Kate Williamson and Anne Syme brought the sing-along version of the much loved musical to The Vogue Cinema in Lanark.

Lots of the audience came dressed as Maria, Greta, brown paper packages tied up with string, a goat and his goatherd and, of course, many nuns.

Money from the event is still coming in so we will update you soon with the final total.

Thank you to all those people who came along on the 9th August and abseiled down the side of Gartnaval Hospital.  The day was a great success.

Sponsorship money is still being donated and we will update you soon with the total.  Thanks to John and Jane for organising the day.

  • The Rotary Club of Hamilton

Mark Williams, club President, along with Bernie Crozier and John Burn visited Maggie's Lanarkshire and made a very generous donation of £2,500 to the centre.

Everyone at Maggie's Lanarkshire is really grateful for this donation, and the opportunity to show exactly how it will be used to support people affected by cancer.

  • Ben Arthur Climb

John Carberry and Clare Ennis climbing Ben Arthur

John Carberry and Clare Ennis climbed Ben Arthur in support of Geraldine, John’s wife and Clare’s sister.  It was a challenging but enjoyable climb and John said of experience:

“People want to help in some way when friends and relatives are diagnosed with cancer but often feel frustrated about what help they can offer.  The Maggie’s Centre in Lanarkshire and the justgiving site has been a huge source of support to Geraldine and all of her family in many ways.

"It is extremely humbling to see how Geraldine has touched so any people from so many places.  People's kindness and care gives us a very important sense of hope and love and to know that we are helping such an important charity to continue to offer such an incredible service to Geraldine and others.

"The walk we did was our own way of saying we climbed a mountain for Geraldine who has climbed many difficult mountains over the past year since being diagnosed – we want to say we are with you on every step and that everyone who sponsored you is with you too.

"Between us we have raised nearly £4000 (not bad since we aimed to raise £1000 each) and we are extremely proud of ourselves and delighted for everyone at Maggie’s Lanarkshire.”

  • Fighting Fit

Derek Stewart presenting a cheque to Maggie's

Derek Stewart, 46, form Strathaven has raised an amazing £13,000 for Maggie’s Lanarkshire by taking part in the amateur boxing event Square Up in the City.

Derek was the first boxer to be trained in Scotland and was trained for three months by Willie Douglas and his grandson William at Larkhall Amateur Boxing Club.

The event was held in front of an audience of 500 people in London.  Without the intensive training Derek undertook he would not have managed to take the punishing blows from an opponent weighing two stone heavier.  Derek is a third dan black belt at Karate but said:  “This has been my toughest challenge to date, boxing is completely different from Karate and the full contact element drains the energy from you”.

The £13,000 raised by Derek will make a significant difference to the lives of those people affected by cancer in Lanarkshire.  Julie Burns, Community Fundraiser for Maggie’s Lanarkshire, said:  “We are extremely grateful to Derek for undertaking such a demanding challenge and for raising such a fantastic sum for Maggie’s.
