“The connection to the cosmos and contacts between East and West – two motives that Maggie and I shared – are in the design. I hope
she would have liked it.”

Welcome to Maggie's South West Wales

Maggie's South West Wales is located at Singleton Hospital, Swansea.

Maggie's is currently running an interim service in temporary accommodation led by Debbie Horrigan, a highly experienced cancer nurse specialist.  If you are affected by cancer please drop in to see Debbie at House 4, North Residence, Singleton Hospital, Sketty Lane, or phone her on 01792 285868.

Debbie has also used her six years of specialist experience to set up a Cancer Genetics Family History workshop to inform and help allay fears about the part genetics play in cancer amongst people with the disease in their family.

Community Fundraiser Vicki Jones has been busy setting up the first annual autumn fashion show, held at Swansea Marriott and with the help of four independent Swansea shops.

Maggie's South West Wales forms part of the Joy of Living campaign: we are working towards raising £3 million for this centre which will be built at South West Cancer Centre, Singleton Hospital.

Maggie’s Centre South West Wales will cost approximately £3 million. We need your support to help build Maggie’s.

About the area

Situated next to the South West Wales Cancer Centre at Singleton Hospital, Maggie’s will serve people living within the South West Wales Cancer Network.

The network covers approximately 900,000 people within the regions of Aberystwyth, Haverfordwest, Swansea, Powys, Carmarthen, Llanelli, Neath Port Talbot and Bridgend. In this area, there are over 3,000 new cases of cancer a year.

Some 20,000 people are living with cancer in the region, not to mention the effects on their friends and family.

Uniquely, Maggie’s South West Wales will be the first centre to collaborate with the cancer genetics service to offer information and practical support to people who are at risk of cancer, based on family history.

Maggie’s has had an interim facility on site since 2006.

The Architect

Kisho Kurokawa, one of the greatest Japanese architects of the 20th Century and a friend of our founder Maggie Keswick Jencks, has created a design which will both inspire and comfort people.

Sadly, Kisho died in October 2007, but fortunately designs had been completed shortly beforehand and Maggie’s and his practice, Kisho Kurokawa Associates, are committed to working together to complete the project. Thore Garbers and Wendy James of Garbers & James are now delivering the project as executive architects.

“The new Maggie’s Centre will come out of the earth and swing around with two arms like a rotating galaxy. One side will welcome the visitor and lead to the other side, which embraces nature, the trees, rocks and water. A place set apart, as she said of a garden. The connection to the cosmos and contacts between East and West – two motives that Maggie and I shared – are in the design. I hope she would have liked it.”

Design

Dr Kisho Kurokawa based his design on the concept of the cosmic whirlpool, representing a strong symbol of life, with everlasting forces swirling around a still centre. The spiral segments of the building will be interchanged with are conceptually alternate swirling streams of water and separated by streaks shafts of warm light. The core of this swirling manifestation is the calm expands, to a meditation terrace, a glass greenhouse, which is floating on water.

The centre will have a glorious site at Singleton Hospital, which overlooks the Swansea Bay. The whole composition is in an elevated position, next to woodland, on the Singleton Hospital site.
