Architecture and Health: a symposium

Architecture of Hope flyer

The Architecture and Health symposium, held in London on 29 April 2010, was designed to explore the ways in which architecture can make a difference to people with cancer.

The symposium brought together architects, medics and the media to discuss the issues that affect those working with people affected by cancer, and the role that architecture can play in helping to meet the challenges they face.

Watch the edited highlights below, including:

Rem Koolhaas, presenting his plans for the forthcoming Maggie's Centre at Gartnavel General Hospital in Glasgow. You can also view a longer segment from Rem's presentation here.

Cor Wagenaar
, examining healthcare architecture, the development of the functionalist hospital and the challenge of improving patients experience through improving the hospital environment. Visit our YouTube channel to watch some of Cor's presentation.

Charles Jencks
, exploring the history of hope in architecture, and the philosophy that underpins Maggie's Centres. See a segment from Charles's presentation here.

Edwin Heathcote
, discussing the history of the hospital in the city. Watch some of Edwin's presentation.

Following the symposium, The Independent said: 'The wave of new Maggie's Centres will be a wonderful demonstration of architecture driven by a profoundly ethical sense of simple, humane ideals. One must hope that these small medically utopian buildings will create a ripple effect that recalls the inspiring motto of London's Finsbury Health Centre, a small masterpiece of medical architecture designed in the late 1930s by Berthold Lubetkin: "Nothing is too good for ordinary people".'

Other speakers included:
Professor Jonathon Gray - Director of Healthcare Improvement Wales Centre for Health and Honorary Senior Lecturer in Medical Genetics at the University of Wales, Cardiff

Sir Michael Hopkins - architect and founder of Hopkins Architects - watch a segment from Michael's presentation

Laura Lee - CEO of Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres

Professor Bob Leonard - Clinical Director Imperial College NHS Healthcare Trust and patron of Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres

Professor Ken Worpole - writer and broadcaster

Chair: Sunand Prasad - immediate past President of the RIBA and senior partner of Penoyre & Prasad architects

The symposium coincided with the launch of a new book by Charles Jencks and Edwin Heathcote - 'The Architecture of Hope'.
