Julia, after her diagnosis of breast cancer

"Beyond the Big C" exhibition

A new exhibition in Glasgow focuses on the artwork produced by a visitor to Maggie’s Dundee following her diagnosis of bowel cancer.

Dr Hannah Hodge Hannah Hodge was diagnosed with bowel cancer- at just 33 years of age- in September 2001. Having had no formal training, Hannah decided to use art as a way to express herself. Now, almost exactly 10 years later, her artworks will form an exhibition at the Mitchell Library Gallery in Charing Cross, Glasgow between 12 and 17 September.

Hannah’s work includes includes installations, photographs, ceramics, paints and wood. The exhibition is a "mini-journey", reflecting the long journey Hannah has travelled since her diagnosis.

During and following her treatment Hannah received support from Maggie’s Dundee and has also been an active member of an online support group on Maggie's Online Centre.

Hannah said: “Much impetus & encouragement to have this exhibition was provided by staff at Maggie’s Dundee, a place which has been vital in enabling me to truly get “beyond” my cancer and all that happened.”

By exhibiting her artworks, Hannah hopes to give encouragement to other people facing cancer, inform people about bowel cancer, about the support she received from Maggie’s and the Bield at Blackruthven.

The exhibition will be open at The Mitchell Library Gallery, Charing Cross, Glasgow from Monday 12 – Saturday 17 September 2011 between 10am and 6pm (5pm Friday and Saturday). Entry to the exhibition is free. Following this the exhibition will move to the Bield at Blackruthven until Saturday 1 October.

Update - December 2011: Hannah has created a website  to display her exhibition pieces and the information that sat beside each piece. You can see the exhibition by visiting beyondthebigc.co.uk.
