Maggie’s South West Wales is given the green light
Thore Garbers and Wendy James (partners in Garbers & James, executive architects for Kisho Kurakawa, Architect) and Maggie's were absolutely delighted to learn that Swansea Council has approved plans for the construction of the new Maggie’s South West Wales on the Singleton Hospital site.
Wendy James from Garber and James Architects, the Executive Architects on the project, said: “It is a pleasure and privilege working alongside clearly committed teams from Maggie’s and the Swansea City Environment Department in such a co-operative and spirited manner.
"Planning Approval will ensure that this inspirational and restorative, beautifully crafted building will be there for so many to use and appreciate in the near future. Such tangible progress invigorates and maintains the essential teamwork and constant motivation required to fund raise and technically deliver the increasingly valued projects that Maggie’s is building. They serve loyal and ever growing communities that are humbling to see, once given the chance to learn about them for oneself. Everyone will know folk who can benefit from this decision for Swansea. Hurrah!”
Maggie’s South West Wales currently have an interim facility, offering a range of services, such as benefits advice, relaxation sessions, tai chi and creative art therapy. A permanent centre would be able to welcome more people, expand upon the programme on offer, as well as creating the all important right environment in which the programme takes place.
Debbie Horrigan, Maggie's South West Wales Centre Head said: “This is fabulous news. This is a great step forward for Maggie’s SW Wales and for the thousands of people in the region affected by cancer. We have proven through the work of our interim facility that Maggie’s has a vitally positive role to play in people’s cancer journey.
"The permanent centre will allow us to open our doors to many more people and will also be able to provide our programme of support within an inspiring and uplifting building. The design is truly wonderful. It is now a case of continuing with our successful fundraising drive to reach the target of £3million, which is need to start building and will fund the first two year’s work. With such great backing from the local community, we are sure we can reach this target in the near future.”
The team at Maggie’s are currently fundraising in the region to raise the target of £3million, which will cover building costs, plus the first two year’s running costs.
