Finding friendship at Maggie's - Karen and Carol's story

Wednesday 13 February

Karen and Carol met at their nearest Maggie’s not long after they were both diagnosed with breast cancer and now, nearly three years later, they are firm friends.

Carol has two children 13 year-old Gregor and 10 year-old Isla while Karen is mum to 11 year-old Tristan. They remember meeting each other for the first time and how helpful they found sharing their experiences:

Karen looked so glamorous in her wig when I met her. Looking at her I remembered thinking there was hope.

From the moment I met Karen Maggie’s became a huge part of my journey and I don’t know where I’d be without that support. Maggie’s felt like a home to me. Every time I came it made me feel better.

– Carol

Carol and I would meet each other every week and I don’t know where we would be without the incredible support system. We spoke about all those things you wouldn’t want to share with your family.

Maggie’s has made us so much more confident. You arrive scared and not knowing what’s next and you leave with a lot of knowledge and an understanding that there are other people in the same boat.

– Karen

We continue to support Carol, as she navigates her return to work, and Karen as she is treated for a third recurrence.

Supporting Maggie's on Kitchen Table Day

Karen and Carol were inspired to give something back because of the support they recieved at Maggie's. In the last two years they have raised more than £20,000 by hosting Kitchen Table Day events.

At their event in 2018, Carol even surprised Karen with a special video of messages from family, friends and famous faces including Chris Hoy, Kirsty Wark, Joanna Lumley and others.

“After all we have got from Maggie’s we knew we had to do something to help.

We started planning a simple Kitchen Table Day event at home, but it grew in size and we ended up holding it in a hotel. That’s the beauty of the Kitchen Table Day event, it can be as big or as small as you like.

What’s important is that you simply come together round a table with family, friends or colleagues, share some food, play a game or just have a cup of tea and chat while raising a few pounds for Maggie’s.”
