Living with cancer

Questions to ask about your diagnosis

When you are told that you have cancer it is likely you will feel both shocked and overwhelmed and it can be diffficult to think of what to ask your healthcare team. The questions below have been suggested by other people with cancer as ones that you may find it helpful to ask.

Write down the name of the doctor or nurse and how to contact them in case you think of questions once you have left.

  • What cancer do I have? Where is the cancer?
  • What tests showed that I have cancer?
  • What stage is it at?
  • Has it spread? If so, where has it spread?
  • What is the likely outcome of my cancer?
  • Do you have any information sheets or booklets about the kind of cancer I have?
  • What kinds of help and support are available for me?
  • What will happen next?
