You will be given handouts so you can practice your stress management techniques at home and learn to draw on these techniques at times of pressure and anxiety.

Our Cancer Support Specialist can offer advice on how to incorporate what you’ve learnt into your daily life after the course has finished.

The next course is now full but we are taking names for the next course starting on 28 October. Please contact the centre to book a place.

Mindfulness is a skill and involves learning to pay attention more consciously, in the present, to what we are doing and experiencing in an open, curious and non-judgemental way.
Mindfulness courses are increasingly used in healthcare as an effective mind-body based approach to help people manage physical and psychological challenges. This 8-week course is called Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for Cancer and aims to enhance wellbeing and an appreciation of life, as well as reducing distress. This is achieved through better awareness of and management of emotions such as anxiety, worry and lowering mood.
The course is very experiential, which means you will be invited to participate in mindful meditations and interactive group based exercises (which include aspects of cognitive behavioural therapy). This experiential learning will help you develop skills leading to a way of ‘being’ in life that is supportive, less automatic and reactive, and less caught up in unhelpful thoughts, beliefs and mood states.

Mindfulness training also allows people to develop a ‘willingness to be with’ what is here including what might be challenging and difficult, which in turn aids a shift towards acceptance, greater ease and less self-judgement.

With an established mindfulness practice it can resource and support you to respond to and navigate the on-going challenges and uncertainty of life following a diagnosis of cancer with more choice, calmness, clarity, self-compassion and resilience.

The atmosphere on the course is warm, allowing and supportive. Attending the introduction to mindfulness session is a prerequisite to attending the 8-week course. Please book your place by contacting the centre.

Art Therapy is a form of Psychotherapy that uses art materials as its main mode of expression and communication. Expressive art is a way to explore your feelings in a non-judgemental space, particularly those that can be difficult to put into  words, with no skill or experience required.

Concentrating on creating art can help slow down, relax and process your thoughts. Your unconscious mind can express feelings through pictures, colour and shapes that you might struggle to put into words. By doing that you may begin to understand more of what you’re feeling, which can help to build your confidence.

Finding out that you or a loved one has cancer affects people in many different ways. Some find it difficult to express in words the many complicated feelings that come with a diagnosis of cancer. This is where the Expressive Art group comes in: sometimes it can be easier to express yourself visually rather than verbally.

Qi Gong is a type of health exercise, practised for centuries by millions of Chinese people.

It's based on repetitions of precise sets of movements, designed to promote the movement of Qi (energy) in the body. A key point in Qi Gong practice is relaxation and deep breathing, both of which are necessary to allow Qi to flow.

Qi Gong is easy to learn and enjoyable to do, and even a few minutes of practise can have an invigorating and rejuvenating effect.

All the sessions are tailored to people with cancer and are flexible to suit your own needs, so you only need to do what feels comfortable.

If you want to take part wear the sort of clothing that allows plenty of unrestricted movement.

This is a drop-in group session, so there's no need to book in advance.
