Maggie's shortlisted for Charity of the Year

Maggie’s has been shortlisted for the title of Charity of the Year as part of The Scottish Charity Awards 2019.

The Maggie’s Penguin Parade, - the art trail of 80 life-sized penguins which raised more than half a million for Maggie’s Dundee last summer - has also been shortlisted for the "Cracking Campaign" Award.

Laura Lee, Maggie’s Chief Executive, said:

This is wonderful news - 2018 was a momentous year for Maggie’s and I am so proud to know we are making such a huge difference to the lives of those living with cancer.

Our 21 centres in the UK allowed us to support 281,000 visits from people with cancer, as well as their friends and families, and I am so pleased we were also able to build a second extension to our original centre in Edinburgh.

We now see one third of all newly diagnosed people and our benefits advisors also helped claim nearly £8 million in benefits in Scotland– a phenomenal figure which means so much more when you think about what it means for people living day to day with cancer.

It was a very busy but successful year for Maggie’s, but what keeps me going is hearing about the hope we give people every day in our centres.

As well as raising more than half a million for Maggie’s Dundee, the Maggie’s Penguin Parade has left a lasting legacy.

Around 60,000 people visited the trail while the events Facebook page attracted 6,000 followers.

All 94 schools, nurseries and community groups in Dundee also go involved.

Sharon O’ Loan, Maggie’s Fundraising Director, said:

It’s wonderful to have Maggie’s Penguin Parade shortlisted for The Scottish Charity Awards Cracking Campaign Award.

While the funds raised will allow Maggie’s Dundee to again welcome 12,000 plus visits next year, the impact of the raised awareness of the support Maggie’s offers will be felt for years to come.

None of which would have been possible without the determination, commitment, energy and talent of the team of volunteers, led by the Chair of Maggie’s Dundee Fundraising Board Shirley Linton, and the interest they worked so hard to generate within the Dundee community.

Maggie’s is also eligible for The Scottish Charity of the Year 2019 People’s Choice Award.  Voting is open between Friday 3 May and Sunday 14 May 2019 and anyone can take part – all you need to do is follow this link:

The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in Edinburgh on the evening of June 14th2019.
