Aiming high for Maggie's

We never for a moment imagined we could raise so much for Maggie’s.

18 months ago, I underwent a major, life changing, spinal operation, and was diagnosed with incurable neuroendocrine cancer... I never thought a year later I’d be climbing Kinder Scout and together with my partner Kate would organise events raising almost £9,000 for Maggie’s Manchester!

In the very early days of my recovery, whilst Kate, was spoon feeding me, I looked at her and said, “When I am able to, I am going to walk up Kinder Scout". The 8 mile circular route, from Hayfield, used to be a “training run“ for me when I was practicing for the 3 peaks challenge. I also used to regularly walk it for leisure, never tiring of the ever changing wonderful view and scenery.

And so, one year on we did it along with 34 friends! What a fantastic day we had and raised more than £2,300 for Maggie’s along the way...

Kate worked incredibly hard organising 3 wine tasting events at our local wine bar and a special birthday celebration for me at an Italian cafe. Each time we raised funds for Maggie’s but neither of us ever for a moment imagined that by the end of the year our total would reach £8,328. We are so proud of this achievement but don’t want to stop now and are already planning our first fundraiser for 2019!

At Maggie’s I join in the creative writing group, art sessions and relaxation. Maggie’s offers all sorts of mindfulness ideas to take me away from what can be, a very dark place at times.. Coming to terms with my diagnosis is very difficult, and without the help of everyone at Maggie’s, I would not be where I am now. Maggie’s is a truly wonderful place... I love it!
