Vicky Ledsom joined the Maggie's Merseyside team in July 2017 as a Cancer Support Specialist.
Vicky’s role is pivotal for the self-referral or drop in component of Maggie’s programme.
She’ll work to make visitors feel welcome, special and valued as individuals – reassured that their concerns have been heard and understood. Along with a warm welcome she’ll be able to provide tailored expert practical advice and answer questions regarding treatment and its side effects.
She’ll be on had to provide immediate one-to-one emotional and psychological support for people in distress, helping them come to terms with their diagnosis and the multitude of worries it can bring. She’ll then be able to signpost visitors to helpful aspects of the programme – whether that is to join one of the support groups, courses or exercise classes.
Vicky, who worked as an oncology nurse at Clatterbridge Cancer Centre for nearly twenty years, said of joining Maggie’s:
I feel privileged to be able to work at Maggie’s, cancer is such an emotive, stressful experience and Maggie’s enables me to support people, their friends and families throughout that time.
