Expressive art is a way to explore your feelings – particularly those which can be difficult to put into words – with no skill or experience required.

Concentrating on creating art can help you slow down, relax and process your thoughts. Your unconscious mind can express feelings through pictures, colours and shapes that you might struggle to put into words. And by doing that you may begin to understand more what you’re feeling, which can help to build your confidence.

Please note this course does not run continuously, so please call 0151 334 4301 to check when the next session is running.

The course introduces different methods of relaxation including: controlling anxious thoughts, meditation, visualisation and ‘quick’ or emergency relaxation.

You will be given handouts and a relaxation CD so you can practise your stress management techniques at home and learn to draw on these techniques at times of pressure and anxiety.

Our Cancer Support Specialist and Psychologist can offer advice on how to incorporate what you’ve learnt into your daily life after the course has finished.

Please note this course does not run continuously, so please call 0151 334 4301 to check when the next session is running.

The chances are you will have heard the term ‘mindfulness’ mentioned at some point recently; it’s being talked about everywhere from businesses to schools to the NHS. From radio discussions to newspaper articles, courses, books and apps, mindfulness has gained momentum as a growing trend over the past few years.

A cancer diagnosis gives rise to so many physical and emotional challenges which may continue well beyond treatment for the person experiencing cancer, and their family and friends. Mindfulness as an approach to meeting these challenges is becoming an important part of our programme of support at Maggie’s.

Mindfulness practice invites you to bring your attention to the present moment with an intention of acceptance, paying attention to thoughts and feelings without judging them, without believing there is a right or wrong way to think in any given moment.

These practices have the intention of teaching people practical skills that can be incorporated into daily life, and which can help manage physical and psychological health problems. With practice, these skills can allow us to navigate ongoing challenges in life with calmness, clarity, curiosity, compassion and resilience.

Vicky, 42, took part in the eight-week mindfulness course at Maggie’s after a diagnosis of ovarian cancer:

“The course has been… the golden thread that saw me through the second half of chemo, and taught me to listen to my body with curiosity. It’s taught me that I have huge resources within myself, including focus and calm, and a few simple techniques to help access them.

"Whilst I’m not practising formally every day, I’m still finding I can ‘tune in’ to my body when I need to. It’s really reassuring to know that this skill is at hand in the background, and that all I need is my own breath. I definitely get less frustrated by the little things in life now. I’m much more easily able to slow down, to take a moment and to recognise negative patterns of thinking.”

Maggie's Clatterbridge will be running a 7 week mindfulness course throughout 2018. Please note this does not run continuously throughout the year, so please call 0151 334 4301 to find out when the next course starts.

Group support is available for people with any type of cancer and their friends and families: before, during or after treatment.

Every group provides an opportunity to talk to other people who are in a similar situation to you, and to share experiences. Groups offer a safe space to express emotions you might not want to share with your friends and family. You might learn from those a little way ahead of you in their journey and develop your own strategies for coping.

Our Gynaecology Support Group meets on the third Thursday of the month.

If you have recently finished treatment and are struggling to come to terms with your diagnosis of cancer, our Where Now? course may be of interest to you. The aim of the course is to improve the ability to manage your life post treatment. A different topic is discussed over the course of the seven week programme.

Running since October 2014, Where Now? looks at the physical, emotional and practical issues that people face when their cancer treatment is over. Comments from previous participants include, "I'm pleased I took the time for myself to do the course over the last weeks" and "I learnt I am emotionally stronger than I thought"

Where Now? is a series of group sessions, each lasting around three hours; each session covers a specific topic and is presented by an expert in the area to help discuss personal goals in relation to the topic for each attendee.

Topics covered include,

  • Exercise post treatment
  • Healthy eating
  • Emotional well being
  • Partnering with your medical team
  • Managing post treatment challenges
  • Keeping up momentum.

If you are interested in taking part in Where Now? give us a ring on 0151 334 4301 or call into our Centre for further details.
