Anna first came to Maggie’s when she was diagnosed with incurable cancer at the age of 34. After receiving support from the Team at Nottingham, she decided she wanted to give something back and became a volunteer. After being a fantastic centre volunteer for over 4 years, Anna sadly passed away in September 2018. She was an important part of the Maggie’s team, and will continue to be missed by us.
When Anna told us about the first time she came to Maggie’s, she said:
I have a very supportive family, but sometimes you need to talk to people who really understand what you’re going through. Maggie’s made me feel really welcomed. I remember walking through the door for the first time and, because there were people there who actually understood what it was like living with cancer, I burst into tears on the spot.
On Saturday 9 March 2019, Anna’s friends and family got together to walk 9 miles and raise funds in her memory. As Anna grew up in Molesey, the team decided to walk from there, along the River Thames to Richmond.
We know Anna would want lots of other families affected by cancer to benefit from the amazing care at Maggie's.
Lucy Morley, Anna’s friend
The walking team were Andy Panayiotou, Caroline Courtney, Claire Kershaw, Karen Wheeler, Lucy Morley, Jenny Parker (Anna's sister), Helen Swan (Anna's mum), Anne and Lyn.
We completed the 9 miles in just under 4 hrs with lots of smiles, laughter & reminiscing along the way. We released our Maggie's balloons in memory of Anna at Hampton Court gate. It was amazing to see them soar into the blue sky & sunshine. Thank you so much to each & every person who has donated - we hope Anna would be really proud of how much we have raised so far for Maggie's.
It was especially nice for Anna’s friends to hear more about her from her family.
It was wonderful to hear lovely stories from Anna's mum about the special child that she was and the incredible woman that she grew into. We had lots of family and friends turn up at the start of the walk to wish us good luck, which was really touching.
Thanks to the efforts of all the team members, they raised an incredible amount to help us fund the centre.
To be together, laughing and reminiscing was incredibly special and the icing on the cake was to smash our fundraising target. We have now raised over £1,700! We hope that would have made Anna so proud and that the money will be really helpful to Maggie's. Our original target was £500, so we've been blown away by everyone's generosity.
We would like to thank Maggie's for taking such good care of Anna and all of those families affected by cancer.
If you would like to raise funds for Maggie’s by organising your own thing, we’d love to hear from you. Please come and see us in the centre or contact us on 0115 924 6211 or by email.
