The Maggie Keswick Jencks Cancer Caring Centres Trust is a company limited by guarantee Company Number: SC162451
Once built, Maggie’s Taunton will be conveniently situated, close to the Beacon Oncology Centre at Musgrove Park Hospital overlooking Galmington Playing Fields with views to the Blackdown Hills.
A beautiful environment and great design are vital to the care Maggie’s offers, which is why we use exceptional architects and garden designers in the creation of our centres. Although each centre is unique, they're all united by a welcoming atmosphere and environment; there are no reception desks and no signs or clocks.
We have appointed RIBA award winning architect Alison Brooks, who has designed a beautiful, calm, inspiring and uplifting building.
Alison’s design is conceived as a collection of transparent pavilions hovering above the gentle slope of the site. Set within a lush landscape, four courtyards will provide sunny havens throughout the day. The glazed walls will blend with the landscape, granting visitors private views of the garden, across the playing fields to the hills beyond.
A big communal table at the heart of the kitchen is where people share experiences and benefit from peer support.
Small, cosy areas with sofas and comfortable seating provide space for visitors to talk informally to one of our experts without the need for an appointment or a referral. Counselling rooms provide privacy for one to one and family support, and larger rooms accommodate workshops, exercise, and support groups.
The building should feel safe and welcoming as well as raise visitors’ spirits by being stimulating and well designed.
It should rise to the occasion to help visitors face one of the most difficult challenges in their lives.
The external informal landscaping has been designed by Johanna Gibbons.
It will provide screening for privacy with areas for sitting, observing and contemplating nature and wildlife with habitats for birds and insects, and opportunities for therapeutic gardening with a small orchard and a potting shed.
RIBA award-winning architect Alison Brooks founded Alison Brooks Architects in 1996.
ABA’s architecture is born from intensive research into the cultural, social and environmental contexts of each project. Their approach enables them to develop authentic, responsive solutions for our buildings and urban schemes, each with a distinct identity.
